I’ve been getting quite a few people checking in on the progress of our fixer upper recently… and that’s probably because everyone knows we would have liked to be moved in by the end of October but given that it’s already half way through October, that’s obviously not happening.
Our new move in date is my birthday, December 7. That is also the dreaded day I turn 30! The big 3-0. Given that I found my first grey hair on my 29th birthday, I’m a little scared of what happens on your 30th!
The new move in date is just under 8 weeks away and a lot has to happen before then! The good thing is we don’t have to finish the master suite because we plan on finishing that while living there (eek, is that a bad idea? Don’t answer that, I don’t care.)
Of the three bedrooms, one is completely done, one is halfway done and one hasn’t even been started. The living room is almost done and just needs some touchup paint here and there. The dining room and hallway need a little spackle work and can then be painted in that beautiful green I’m obsessed with!
But then we have the kitchen and bathroom…
These are the two rooms that are still in desperate need of massive amounts of time, energy and decisions. Oh the decisions that go along with renovating!!
Kitchen
I finally have all the cabinets built (check out my Instagram or Facebook for some time lapses of the process) and now Mr. Stone Head and myself need to finish hanging them. We’ve hung a total of two cabinets so far and have discovered the walls are not only not square but they are also bowed and bulging in areas which makes it quite difficult to plumb the cabinets.
So, in order to finish the kitchen we need to hang the cabinets, install the butcher block counters (and source them), install the backsplash, order appliances and get the plumber back to do the “finish work.” We also have crown molding that matches the cabinetry that needs to be installed!
Bathroom
The bathroom needs everything and then some. The biggest undertaking we still need to take in the bathroom is removing the old window and framing in for a smaller one. Then we have to close up all the walls, lay cement board on the floors and shower walls and tile said floor and walls. Then I need to paint the walls and ceiling, put the vanity together, figure out what kind of countertop and sink to do, find and install a medicine cabinet and figure out what light fixtures to use.
WHEW.
Then the plumber can come back and do the final hook ups.
Oh and did I mention we need to get an electrician over there as well? Don’t even ask me what he needs to do because I’m afraid the answer is going to be “everything.” We also need to get the house roofed at some point within the next 7-1/2 weeks because we can’t have a leaky roof ruining all of our hard work!
After each room gets painted we are also switching out all the black and tan outlets and switches for white ones – it’s just a cleaner look to have all matching, unpainted receptacles and switches, don’t you agree?
I also need to measure for, buy and hang all the blinds on the first floor – which is actually an all day project and one that I’m not looking forward to.
I’m sure there are things I’m forgetting and there are always small projects that are created from finishing bigger projects but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! And after we move in there’s still a shit ton of shit to do – windows, siding, the master suite, the front porch the back porch, the landing to the basement and we’d even like to paint the garage!
So even though we’re looking to move in soon, the work on the house isn’t going to end any time soon! So follow along on my Instagram or Facebook to keep up to date on the progress of the house!
