Natural Glass Cleaner Recipe
As The Healthy Home Improvement Blogger (you know… the one who brings you the best home improvement tutorials AND teaches you how to live in a healthy home free from chemicals) I feel it’s my duty to bring you the healthy home recipes I use around my own house… like this homemade natural glass cleaner recipe!
I’ve always been intrigued by a homemade glass cleaner and even remember my mom trying a few different recipes of her own (and the lingering smell of vinegar… if only she had known about essential oils!) My original reason for coming up with a class cleaner recipe was to save money because DIY anything is almost always cheaper than store bought. But when I turned my life around and lost 75 pounds I accidentally found out just how toxic most of the things we’re using in our homes actually are.
Even though there are people out there who don’t care to reduce chemicals around the home I love to share these recipes with my readers because I CARE ABOUT YOU. My opinion is this, if it’s easy enough to switch to something that has less chemicals, why not!?
Below I’ll go over two different recipes for natural glass cleaner. If you look real close you’ll see they’re basically the same but in the second one I add an ingredient that contains something called surfactants.
Surfactant? What the… what is that?
Without going into the details, surfactants are what grab or encapsulate dirty/oily/greasy substances and makes it easier to clean!
Ever since I learned about surfactants, I’ve been obsessed with researching them! Stay tuned for an exciting science nerd post about surfactants!! ::eye-roll::
Speaking of eye rolls, you guys know I have to do it… I must disclose the following so I don’t get in trouble with the FTC and their truth in advertising guidelines: You can assume that links within this post are affiliate links which means I make a small commission if you purchase from my link at no increase in cost to you. Anyway, without further ado, here are my natural glass cleaner recipes!
Natural Glass Cleaner Ingredients
- 8-12 drops essential oil* of choice (Best choices are lemon, pine, or even a mixture of lemon and pine for a DIY natural homemade pine-sol!)
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 2 cups filtered or distilled water
Note: The filtered or distilled water in this natural glass cleaner recipe and not just tap water is an important ingredient. Filtered water is okay for short term use but if you plan on keeping the stuff around in a container for a while, I’d recommend going a step further and using distilled water – it doubly helps with not leaving behind any residue! It also helps with hard water build up in the bottle over time.
Natural Glass Cleaner Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients in a glass spray bottle and shake shake shake!
- Glass is preferable because some essential oils can react with plastic.
- Amber glass is even more preferable because EO’s can also be sensitive to light.
- Spray window and clean from top to bottom with a clean soft lint free microfiber cloth.
- I sometimes use newspaper and have also found that coffee filters work nicely as well and don’t leave any lint behind!
- That’s it. Sit back and enjoy the clear view that this natural glass cleaner just gave you!
But wait…
I mentioned that I have two natural glass recipes!
The above glass cleaner recipe before I found Thieves cleaner from Young Living. While the recipe above works exceptionally well, I’ve found the addition of Thieves just cuts grease and grime on windows a little better and quicker, thanks to those lovely surfactants I mentioned above. And when flipping houses and remodeling we come across a lot of disgustingly greasy and dirty glass so the below recipe is now my go to recipe for all things glass and mirror!

I also want to note that Mr. Stone Head now requests for me to make this natural glass cleaner as he has used it many times (not to clean our windows or anything like that but for things like cleaning his tv stand and truck windows!) This is huge as he has been on the hunt ever since I met him over 5 years ago for the perfect glass cleaner, mainly for his truck windows. Welp… he’s found his favorite glass cleaner and it just so happens to be an all natural glass cleaner with all plant based ingredients!
