You probably came here looking for an answer to how much does it cost to make your own concrete countertops. So guess what, I’m not going to make you read through this entire post for the answer! To DIY concrete counters it costs about $8-$15 a square foot (for material.)
This is what I love about certain DIY projects. Concrete countertops are considered a highend counter and ranges in cost from $65-$125 a square foot when professionally installed (or more if you add in fancy schmancy gems or sea shells or what not.)
Here’s the thing though, the DIY concrete counters cost per square foot above only includes materials. That doesn’t consider the special tools you might need to buy in order to DIY your own counters! Concrete needs a few special tools in order to get the “finish” right and I highly highly recommend a good mixer and a giant clean bucket or small trash can. I’ll link at the end of this post to the disaster that our second concrete counters experience turned out to be so that you can avoid some of the mistakes that we encountered!
Before I go any further (and my loyal readers know where this is going…) I must announce that you can assume most of the links below are affiliate links which means I make a small commission (super teeny tiny commission unfortunately) with no increase in cost to you! Read more about that here if you want to bore yourself to sleep.
The Tools & Supplies You Need | How to Make a Concrete Countertop
This post won’t go into exactly how to make a concrete countertop because I’m focusing on how much it costs to make a concrete countertop. I’ll write a post about how to DIY concrete countertops soon but for now I’ll link to my other articles on our concrete countertop making experiences at the bottom of this post.
A Paddle Mixer (make sure you have a powerful enough drill to mix concrete)
Concrete Countertop Forms (if doing pour in place counters)
*I used a concrete countertop mix that was ready to go. All we had to do was add water and mix! The same company also makes a product that you can add to regular old Quikrete concrete from your local home improvement store. Using the additive instead of the pre-mixed countertop mix saves a lot on shipping. You can also now buy something similar from Amazon which has two components you add to regular concrete, a water reducer and an admixture [check it out here]!
Can you see how quickly it adds up to make a concrete countertop if you don’t already have some or most of the tools required to do so? The list above is close to $500 for an average 30sqft of kitchen countertop, and that’s without a powerful drill and wet sander! With the power tools added it’s closer to $900!
How Much Does it Cost to Make Your Own Concrete Countertops
So now you’re probably wondering “how much does it cost to make you own concrete countertops IN TOTAL, not just material!?!”
I hate to say it but it it really depends. It depends on which concrete countertop mix you go with, how many tools you already have lying around and what forms you go with. On average, I’d say the average DIYer either has or could borrow from a fellow DIYer, most of the tools they need. A person with about 30 sqft of kitchen counters would probably be spending between $400 and $700… that’s nearly the same price as laminate!!
As some of you might know, we did concrete counters in the kitchen of our apartment remodel and even the bathroom countertop!! I wound up staining the concrete countertop in the bathroom to try and match the shower tile. You can judge for yourself in the picture below if I did a good job or not. I personally like the way it came out but it doesn’t exactly match the tile in the shower. We also did a faux rock edge on both concrete countertops and I LOVE the way that came out.
I hope this post answered the question “how much does it cost to make your own concrete countertops?” I truly believe doing your own concrete counters is an easy-ish way to update a kitchen on a budget, while not looking like you used budget countertop material. Does that make sense?
My only suggestion before attempting DIY concrete countertops is to do some research beforehand and also to make a small “practice” countertop before you do the real thing. If you do decide to DIY a concrete countertop, I’d love to see it! Find me on social me @thestoneheaddiy!
