Those pesky ants are everywhere aren’t they!??! We’ve had them in the house, in the driveway and worst of all IN MY SHED!!
Okay, maybe the worst place for ants to be isn’t in my shed… but we’re about to re-roof it and fix it up (because it’s quite literally falling apart and it’s now raining inside my shed) and those pesky little guys need to go!
The second I saw those marching black ants I knew what I had to do… DIY ant killer.
I remembered an ex’s mom using some concoction of borax and jelly to get rid of ants she had on her kitchen counter. I didn’t have any jelly so I turned to good old google and looked up “DIY ant killer with borax” and found quite a few recipes I could use, some using jelly, peanut butter, powder sugar and others using an even more simple ingredient… water! (Who doesn’t love a SIMPLE three ingredient ant killer?)
Also, if you know me well, you’d know that I am all about chemical free living and that I hate the thought of commercial products that use simple and cheap ingredients but jack the price up x100 just to make a buck. Ant baits and traps are no exception. Seriously people, for a fraction of the cost you can make your own and it’s wayyyy better for the environment. Those damn companies actually piss me off.. making people think we need their chemical laden products when we can create most of them in the comfort of our own kitchens (or sheds in my case.) But I digress as usual…
I also found out WHY borax is a great ant killer! Not only is it the main “killing ingredient” in commercial ant killers – it doesn’t just kill the ant that ate it, it kills the entire colony. Even though borax has a low toxicity level for humans, ants are a different story. The borax messes with their digestive system and slowly kills them ( I truly hate killing anything living but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.)
So these worker ants think they are doing a great deed by foraging for this awesome food but little do they know, they are killing themselves and all their buddies. The great thing about this solution is that because the borax takes time to kill the ants, it gives them ample time to bring the “food” back to the nest and wipe out the entire colony! Which means NO MORE ANTS.
I tried this DIY ant killer recipe and within 48 hours the ants were gone. G-O-N-E. So give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments! (*This post may contain affiliate links.)
DIY Ant Killer Recipe
Instructions
- Mix the warm water and sugar until the sugar dissolves and is no longer granulated (I do mine in a mason jar.)
- Mix in the borax until all is incorporated
- Put the mixture into shallow dishes (I used lids) by itself or with soaked cotton balls/paper towels.
- Watch the ants line up to die!
I feel bad even writing #4 but it’s the truth. I’m standing there screaming at them “NOOOO you stupid ants, don’t eat it! It’s poison!” But they don’t listen. But in my head I’m all like “Tee hee hee, I have tricked you tiny little annoying beings! Now bring this poison to your master and die!”
Okay, I may be a little delirious today (that’s what nonstop working will do to a gal.) Anyway, let me know in the comments if you have any luck with this DIY ant killer… I know I did! Just make sure if you use this concoction inside to keep it away from children and pets!
